Chickpeas are about as old as time in many Mediterranean cultures. Older than tomatoes actually. In fact, at the Metropolitan Museum, there's a framed papyrus letter from Heraclides to his brother Petechois containing a farmers market shopping list to pick up lupines, kidney beans, fenugreek and, low and behold, chickpeas!
In Calabria and Sicily, you'll find chickpeas and chickpea flour being used with many dishes. Especially with pasta, yum! So naturally, the combination of hummus (a creamy chickpea condiment) and our spicy Tomato 'Nduja (a meatless salami spread inspired by the Mediterranean) just made total sense as a quick and easy side dish for any night at home or as a delicious dip for your next dinner party with bread, chips and cheese. Chickpeas, like tomatoes, are incredibly versatile which is why this combo works very well together. Mix it up this week and let me know your thoughts. We don't call our Tomato 'Nduja an 'everything sauce' for nothing. It literally goes with everything!
