Summertime is the best time for zucchini flowers (aka fiore di zucca). This particular type of flower is also very beautiful to look at because of their vibrant orange color while the feel is like touching very delicate velvet. Zucchini flowers are a vegetable flower. You can only pick them in the early morning hours (I love doing that) because come late morning they start to close up for the rest of the day. Their way of protecting themselves from the hot summer sun.
Where I come from in Calabria, we make delicious zucchini flower fritters (pittedi di fiuri) throughout the season when they're available in abundance (recipe coming soon). Or, I stuff them with meats, veggies, cheeses and fresh herbs. Unlike other vegetables and herbs from my garden, I cannot store zucchini flowers in the freezer for winter because of their extreme fragile state; it's just not possible. It's ok though, I enjoy waiting through winter for the summer season's urban crop.
